Caddy Shack Omaha

Even seasoned party animals can feel out of touch when they walk into a bar and try to order a drink. Drink menus have more options than you can shake a cocktail stick at, and it’s nothing like TV where you can just walk into a bar and demand a generic “beer” to be served up from the tap. Here are some do’s and don’ts when ordering a drink at a bar.

Do’s & Don’ts of Ordering a Drink at a Bar

DO:

Know what you’re ordering.

Check the menu to see just what you’re ordering. Ignore the fancy names: Note the ingredients and types of alcohol that make the drink, especially if you have any known alcohol sensitivities (most people do) or allergies.

Check your alcohol levels.

Keep an eye on how much alcohol you’re consuming, more or less, and how close you’re getting to the legal limit. After a night of drinking, a simple disposable breathalizer test can be the difference between a responsible drinker’s life or a drunk driver’s death.

Ask when ordering.

When you’re ordering for someone else, make sure you ask before placing your order – this can save a lot of uncomfortable moments when you find out that you just ordered someone with gluten intolerance a beer or whiskey.

DON’T:

Don’t order without checking the price.

Always check the price before you order a drink and avoid a nasty surprise by the end of the night when you get your table’s bill.

Don’t let the drink out of your site.

Drink spiking is a real danger in bars, and it happens to both women and men; always keep an eye on your drink, and never turn your back on an open drink in a bar – even when you’re sure someone trusted is watching.

Don’t order the fishbowl or all-you-can-drink special.

A fishbowl or “all you can drink” special sounds like a great deal at first sight – but it’s an industry trick that you should avoid. It’s usually the bar’s way of getting rid of all their surplus alcohol, and you’re usually served the bottom-end of their selection – it’s a great way to get drunk fast and sick sooner.
