Here’s a look at some of the hidden gems that you have to check out in and around Omaha, NE.
Joslyn Castle
Located in Omaha’s Gold Coast Historic District, the Joslyn Castle is a stately mansion and is the perfect way to spend an afternoon – or an entire day. This Scottish Baronial Ghothic Revival mansion was once the home of Sir Walter Scott. It was built in 1903 and offers 35 rooms that are housed within four stories to explore. Some of the highlights of the property include a detailed staircase, which is crafted of mahogany, a spacious ballroom, colorful stained glass windows that cascade rainbow effects when the sun shines through, and an Aeolian pipe organ. You can take a private or public tour of the property, and don’t forget to stroll through the well manicure gardens, too.
Heron Haven Nature Center
Fed by natural springs, the Heron Haven Nature Center is home to marshes, swamps, and woods that offer plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with Mother Nature. Here, you can walk along foliage lined paths and boardwalks, where you can see tons of wildlife (herons, geese, ducks, butterflies, deer, and much more) in their natural element. There’s a museum, too, where you can learn more about the flora and fauna that surrounds the area.
Standing Bear Lake
Along the outskirts of northwestern Omaha is Standing Bear Lake, an impressive lake where you can really unwind and enjoy the beauty of nature. Take a paddleboat, a kayak, a paddleboard, or a canoe out on the lake. Cast a reel into the water and you might just catch some bass, trout, or catfish. There’s a flying field in the park that surrounds the lake, where you can let remote controlled planes soar. Pack a picnic, or just lie back and take in the fresh air and the beauty that surrounds you. You can enjoy the peaceful music of a wind organ sculpture, which plays melodic tunes when the wind passes through it. When the lake freeze over in the winter, it’s a great place to ice skate.
